"Waste heat recovery” is the process of “heat integration”, that is, reusing heat energy that would otherwise be disposed of or simply released into the atmosphere. By recovering waste heat, plants can reduce energy costs and CO2 emissions, while simultaneously increasing energy efficiency.
Waste heat-powered thermal fluid heating systems offer a closed loop, liquid phase heat transfer system to capture wasted energy and transfer it to various users. These systems capture waste heat using a hot gas or liquid heat exchanger to heat a circulated heat transfer fluid in a closed loop.
Waste heat is heat that is produced by a machine, or other process that uses energy, as a byproduct of doing work. All such processes give off some waste heat as a fundamental result of the laws of thermodynamics.
Waste Heat Minimization and Recovery (WHP) present a significant opportunity for efficiency and cost reduction in the industrial sector, with potential for lower energy bills and maintenance costs. The 2024 Investment Tax Credit (ITC) in the US recognizes WHP as an emission-free resource, encouraging its development. Extending this tax incentive is crucial to meeting net-zero carbon emission goals by 2050, fostering job creation, and maintaining American leadership in clean energy. State governments should also include WHP in renewable energy portfolios and local incentive programs to further drive its adoption.
